Apple Watch Launched in India, starts at Rs. 30,990

Fifteen months after the first look of the first generation Apple Watch at Apple’s September 2014 Keynote, the tech giant has launched its wearable in India. Just after the peak iPhone sales, post iPhone 6s release, the Apple Watch is just in time in India, for Diwali.

Beginning today, Apple Watch will be available for purchase through Apple’s Retail Stores throughout the country. Seven months after its debut launch in other countries, Apple Watch will be available in all its variants (except the Hermès series). As we know, Apple Watch comes in over 40 combinations in two sizes of 38mm and 42mm across three series, Watch Sport, Watch and Watch Edition. The cheapest Apple Watch, Watch Sport 38mm will cost Rs. 30,990 for a sport band and silver aluminium case. The same model will cost Rs. 34,900 if opted in 42mm case, which might be the case for most, as the reviews suggest that the 38mm is too small even for most women.

The regular Apple Watch variant ranges from Rs. 48,900 to Rs. 95,900. It is Rs. 48,900 and Rs. 52,900 for the 38mm and 42mm stainless steel case respectively, with White Sport Band while the price goes up to Rs. 95,900 along with the stainless steel link bracelet and Rs. 60,900 in the Classic Buckle leather strap option in two colours although the recently introduced flashy red coloured sport band is another option.

The top of the line, Apple Watch Edition, comes with jaw-dropping price tags that start at Rs. 8.2 lakh for the 38mm and Rs. 9.9 lakh for 42mm models paired with the cheapest White Sport Band. While the most expensive one in the series is priced at a whopping Rs. 14.2 lakh i.e. 18-karat Rose Gold Case with Rose Gray Modern Buckle priced at $17,000 in other markets.

Apple is selling standalone bands that can be purchased separately. These are made of different materials such as leather, fluoroelastomer and stainless steel mesh as well as leather loops with magnets inside for quick fastening. Colourful Sport Bands (available in 13 shades) are the cheapest and are priced at Rs 3,900 ($50 in US) each. Though there third-party watch bands available on Amazon USA for as low as $14.99 (~ Rs. 1000), there aren’t listed on any Indian e-commerce websites.

I really don’t expect sighting an Apple Watch on someone in India soon. Owning a smartwatch myself, for a year now, I haven’t met anyone with one ever. Also, the reactions I receive when people realise that I’m wearing a smartwatch makes me more and more sure about it. That been said, it may an initial boom because it is launched when Diwali is just around the corner but it won’t be a big hit like iPhones. Considering that Moto 360 starts at just Rs. 12,000 on Flipkart, offering a much more traditional look with thin bezels and circular display, Apple Watch looks like an overpriced gadget. I really won’t consider buying one, since we just a few months away from the release of next generation Apple Watch.
