BQ Aquaris E5 HD Ubuntu Edition Now Available

The new Ubuntu based smartphone from Spanish Smartphone maker BQ which was released earlier this month, the BQ Aquarius E5 HD Ubuntu Edition was available for pre-order from 11 June and now is available for immediate buying when BQ began processing the orders on June 22. This phone is projected as the successor the Ubuntu OS based BQ Aquarius E4.5 released earlier by the company. The phone is currently available in the European Union, Norway and Switzerland, will cost EUR 199.99 (Rs. 14,334).

The BQ Aquaris E5 HD Ubuntu Edition has a 1.3GHZ quad-core MediaTek Cortex A7 CPU with Mali 400 GPU under the hood capable of performing regular tasks with ease and the GPU should allow for a better gaming experience and 1 GB RAM. It sports a 5-inch Capacitive IPS display with 1280×720 HD resolution, 16:9 aspect ratio for better viewing angles and 294 PPI count, equipped with a Dragontrail Protection Glass. The said display protection technology is similar to that of the Corning Gorilla Glass and also offers strength and screen resistance against scratch and damage albeit at a lower cost. This technology has been used on Xiaomi’s Redmi series smartphones and XOLO smartphones too. The device has a 13MP rear shooter with dual-flash and auto-focus and a 5MP camera on the front for selfies and video calling. It has also been provided with ambient noise cancellation to improve speaker output , brightness sensor, a notification LED, proximity sensor, and a great 2500 mAh battery. It has a regulation 3.5 mm headphone jack, with 16 GB internal memory and expandable up to 32 GB with a micro SD card.

It runs the latest Iteration of the Ubuntu Touch OS, which is innovative in its approach to navigation by using “Scopes” which give access to content without actually using the application significantly reducing the weight on the processor. It has a decent Software store with all the major applications, and is still expanding.

Though the penetration of the Ubuntu Mobile has been quite insignificant in the market, and it has to compete with the likes of Android and iOS for market share, only through significant duress and commitment to innovate and make the software and hardware can it penetrate the market. It also needs to be made available in countries like China and India for better exposure to the alternative Operating systems.
