Pebble Time hits Kickstarter: Voice Dictation, Color e-Paper and More

Last week, the Pebble’s website started the countdown to ‘something’, and now it’s finally here. Pebble released its latest smartwatch, the Pebble Time, through a brand new Kickstarter campaign. This was just like what Pebble did in 2012, to release their first watch. Pebble Time surpassed its pledge of $500,000 in the first half hour of the campaign and has raised a total amount of more than $7,000,000 by the time of publishing this article. In addition to the previously mentioned statistics, the new Pebble Time project is currently backed by over 33,000 Kickstarter users.

The Pebble time is a complete overhaul of the original Pebble’s design. The watch’s body has a slight curve to support the wrist and the watch in now 20% thinner, and is only 9.5 mm this time. For starting pieces, the watch will feature silicon bands and steel bezels. Besides the change in the design, the interaction system has not changed. We still don’t have touchscreen, have the same button layout instead. We now have a new quick release feature for the strap making it easy to swap out bands, a special smart accessory port for add-on sensors, and an updated OS that adds several improvements while still offering up compatibility with all 6,500+ existing Pebble apps and watchfaces. That’s not all though.

Just like the design, the inside of the watch has also been hit by drastic changes. Unlike the ’16 Shades of Grey’ display, we now have a color e-paper display with Gorilla Glass. The Pebble Time can take voice dictation through its built-in microphone. With Pebble recently bringing Android Wear app support to the Pebble platform, this is an important addition that means you can now send voice replies for SMS, Hangouts, Facebook Messenger, Gmail, WhatsApp and many other apps — at least if you’re on Android. For iOS users, the voice reply feature is limited to Gmail notifications.

The Pebble Time will have the new ‘Timeline Interface’. The new interface is said to sort everything in three broad categories- Past, Present and Future. Pebble has also confirmed the support of Timeline Interface for the original Pebble and Pebble Steel. The watch will be first shipped in May 2015, to its KickStarter backers. Pebble also says that they have not change anything that people love about pebble, the 7-day battery life, Water Resistance and the Dust Resistance. The watch will be made available in three colors, the Black, White and Red.
