Xiaomi Plans to Sell Smartphones through its own eCommerce Portal, Mi.com

Chinese smartphone manufacturer, Xiaomi will now start selling smartphones through it’s own portal as it looks to strengthen it’s presence in the Indian market. Xiaomi has already sold over 1 million devices since it entered the Indian market in August 2014. Xiaomi currently sells it’s phones through the online e-commerce site, Flipkart whereas, in most of the other countries, Xiaomi sells through it website.

The company also announced that its looking of a warehouse and logistics partner to distribute and carry out payment services like cash on delivery (COD) among others. Xiaomi India Head, Manu Jain said that they are in the process of signing the lease on a facility in Bangalore, which will be their R&D unit, first one outside China. Work on the facility is expected to commence by the end of March and in the next few months it will be operational. Although he declines to provide any further details on investment and the number of people expected to work at the R&D facilities. The plan is to focus on localisation, themes and India specific features to cater to local requirements. Xiaomi says they will continue their partnership with Flipkart in spite of launching their own portal, Mi.com. The company currently has 5 Mi exclusive service centers in India and plans to expand them over the next few months.

According to research firm IDC, India is the fastest growing smartphone market in the Asia Pacific region with about 82 per cent growth in the July-September quarter of 2014 over the same period last year. The growth is being driven by increasing preference of consumers to upgrade to smartphones as well as shorter refresh cycles. The shipments grew 82 percent year-on-year to 23.3 million units in the third quarter of this year, while it was higher by 27 percent on a quarter-on-quarter basis.

India is the second largest market for the manufacturer and represents a huge sales opportunity for Xiaomi. The company executives have constantly reaffirmed the belief that India is in focus for the chinese based company, which reflects on the pace with which new products, services and infrastructures are being built in the country. Starting a R&D center and their own web portal shows Xiaomi means business.
