Samsung Announces Five Times Faster Wi-Fi Technology

Samsung, the South Korea based company has announced a new development in the field of Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi). It has announced that 802.11ad WiFi technology will be a reality soon in the near future. Once developed, this technology will replace the current 802.11ac WiFi, which gives a maximum speed of 866 Mbps using 2.4 and 5 GHz channels. As compared to this architecture, 802.11ad gives a maximum data transmission speed of 4.6 Gbps using 60 GHz channels, which translates to a five times faster speed. This means that a 1 GB video file would take less than 3 seconds to download, and uncompressed high-definition videos can easily be streamed from mobile devices to TVs in real-time without any delay.

This is not a whole new idea by itself. Previous attempts have been made for implementation, but had failed because 60 GHz waves that travel by line-of-sight cannot penetrate through walls, thus restricting the access to merely a room, as done by the trade organization WiGig.

Samsung claims to have found a breakthrough for this problem “by leveraging millimeter-wave circuit design and high performance modem technologies and by developing wide-coverage beam-forming antenna”. Also, according to Samsung, “unlike the existing 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi technologies, Samsung’s 802.11ad standard 60 GHz Wi-Fi technology maintains maximum speed by eliminating co-channel interference, regardless of the number of devices using the same network”.

Samsung plans to implement this technology in various products including audio-visual devices, medical devices and telecommunication equipments. One can also expect this to have major applications in Samsung’s Smarthome concept. Samsung expects that the technology will be ready and commercialised as early as next year, but this commercialization would be industrial, and need not necessarily mean that Samsung products supporting 60 GHz WiFi would come flowing into the market by next year.
