Overview of Samsung Galaxy S IV

Samsung unveiled its latest flagship at Unpacked 2013 Episode 1 on 14(USA)/15(India) March 2013. Samsung really did a lot of improvements in the hardware but more on the software side. The Samsung Galaxy S IV resembles the look of the previous generation Galaxy S III and the Note 8.0, with its plastic body and rounded design. For more fun, Samsung just made the event wired looking. The Galaxy S IV is slimmer (at just 7.9 mm) and lighter than the previous generation of smartphones. On the colors perspective, Samsung calls the colors “Black Mist” and “White Frost” this time, which are same as human black and white respectively. The tagline of the device says “Life Companion” which is as wired as “Designed for Humans”.

Moving onto the power of this smartphone, this is a really powerful device that packs the following specifications.

1. Performance

This device packs a 8-core CPU with big.LITTLE architecture that means only 4 cores will be active at any moment. It packs a Exynos 5410 processor clocked at 1.6 GHz (ARM 15), but will ship with Snapdragon 600 processor clocked at 1.9 GHz in some regions (including US). The specs says that the device is a power-house and just much more than needed. We will see to the actual performance at the time of market availability.

2. Screen

The device packs a 1080p Super AMOLED display, which is kind of shocking as it was earlier rumored that Samsung is having problems in producing the 1080p screens. A Samsung representative almost confirmed it in a talk with a reporter. Anyways, the display is based on the hexagonal pentile structure instead of the regular ones. It looks sharp and crisp. It has a ppi of 441 which is pretty good and obviously better than “Retina” as called by Apple.

One more interesting thing is that, we can use the device with gloves hands on.

3. Software

This flagship has Android 4.2.2 which is the latest Android version available. Most of the other high-end devices like the HTC One doesn’t pack such a new version of the firmware. The new skin that Samsung is using on the device is the Touchwiz Nature UX 2.0, which is also a successor to previous v1.0 in the S III. Samsung has included a ton of Samsung specific apps that will make this device a true ‘Life Companion’. It packs a app called “S Health” which promises to deliver all the kind of health monitoring facilities, Samsung also introduced some accessories that will work with this app, we assume that only with this app. The “S Translator” app was also introduced, that will translate all your emails and messages to whichever language you want. It will also support Speech Recognition and Speech Synthesis in 10 languages.

Much rumored and awaited features were also introduced like the “Smart Scroll” and “SmartPause”. Smart Scroll will help you scroll in the UI with just your eyes, Smart Pause will pause the playing video with you look away from the device and will also resume when you look back. “Air View” and “Air Gestures” were also introduced, Air View is the same as we saw in the Note 2.0, we can just hover over the content to have a sneak peak, with Air Gestures we can browse through photos and more without even touching the device.

4. Memory and Connectivity

This device will be available in 3 models with internal storage of 16/32/64 GB with a microSD card slot to expand it, we are so happy to see the microSD card slot that is not available in the other flagship devices.

In terms of connectivity, it has all those standard options like GPS, A-GPS, NFC, WiFi a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth, IR Blaster. Samsung also introduced some special features related to connectivity like the Group Play, with which you can play a certain music/video to other devices in Sync. You can also play multiplayer games with it. Samsung also has “WatchOn” app as a TV Guide and can also control your home TV. This device has HomeSync support built in that was showcased in MWC this year.

5. Other

Samsung announced that this is the first device to have Knox built in. This is nice for BYOD industries. Samsung has not given any wording on the price but it will come somewhere in April 2013. We guess this will be a super-premium device with a price of $800-$850 (Rs 44000 – Rs 46750).

We will see other information at the time of market availability. Watch the small intro to it!
