Everything about Intel’s next Generation (6th Gen) Processors

Intel announced a new set of mobile processors for 2-in-1 laptops, ultra-thin and large screen notebook PCs. Under the 6th Gen Core Processors for Mobile, Intel will offer 12 products, divided under their old product lines of core i3, i5 and i7 series. All the 6th Gen Core Processors for Mobile have been categorised into four categories, High-Performance Graphics, High-Performance Graphics & Unlocked, High-Performance Graphics & Quad Core and Ultra-low Power. The latest Intel Core vPro processors with built-in wireless technologies have launched in Asia Pacific to transform workplaces and allow for more mobile workers and greater collaboration.

6th Gen Intel Core i7 Processors

The six processors offered under 6th Gen Intel Core i7 are designed to cater different types of people. The 6th generation Intel Core i7 processors are said to deliver a new class of computing with a host of new features to power the next generation of smartphones. Intel wants us to expect lightning fast speeds and peak performance through even the toughest of tasks and games. The built-in Intel Hyper-Threading Technology allows each processor core to work on two tasks. Intel vPro Technology is a set of security and manageability capabilities built into the processor aimed at addressing critical areas of IT security. Though most of 6th Gen Core i7 processors offer Intel Hyper-Threading Technology, the Core i7-6820HK and  Core i7-6700HQ do not feature Intel vPro Technology. All the 6th Gen Core i7 processors have 4K display support at 60Hz. The Ultra-low Power series of 6th Gen Core i7 processors, featuring i7-6600U and i7-6650U are dual core (with 4MB cache) whereas the other 6th Gen Core i7 processors are quad core (with 8MB cache except 6MB on i7-6700HQ). The clock speeds in 6th Gen Core i7 processors range from 2.2GHz (on i7-6650U) to 2.9GHz (on i7-6920HQ).

These 6th Gen Core i7 processors are the best and most powerful for mobile by Intel yet. When combined with good amount RAM should be able to run all the mobile apps and games like a breeze. The Intel Atom Z3580 featured on the Asus ZenFone 2 with 4GB RAM to my experience has held up to the most demanding and power hungry tasks.

6th Gen Intel Core i5 Processors

For the crisper videos and more versatile gaming, Intel has introduced 6th Generation of Intel Core i5 Processors. These will offer a much more efficient performance. Intel will offer 6th Gen Intel Core i5 Processors in Ultra-low Power and High-Performance & Quad Core categories only. All the 6th Gen Core i5 processors have 4K display support at 60Hz just like the i7 series. Also, like the 6th Gen Core i7 Processors, i5 Processors also feature Intel vPro Technology. Though some do offer Intel vPro Technology, the Core i5-6440HQ and  Core i5-6300HQ do not feature Intel vPro Technology. The Ultra-low Power series of 6th Gen Core i5 processors, featuring i5-6300U and i5-6200U are dual core (with 3MB cache) whereas the other 6th Gen Core i5 processors are quad core (with 6MB cache). The clock speeds in 6th Gen Core i5 processors have base clock speeds ranging from 2.3GHz (on i5-6200U) to 2.6GHz (on i5-6440HQ). These clock speeds will be drastically increased, when needed, up to 3.5GHz on i5-6440HQ.

These are some very powerful set of processors and may be seen in next generation flagships from some of the major mobile manufacturers. These processors dissipate extremely low power when operating at Base Frequency with all cores active under an Intel-defined, high-complexity workload. The Ultra-low Power series of 6th Gen Core i5 processors, featuring i5-6300U and i5-6200U are rated at just 15W.

6th Gen Intel Core i3 Processors

With fast wake and faster CPU,  6th Gen Intel Core i3 Processors will last longer and work smarter. Compatible f0r 4K movies with crisp pictures thanks to Iris graphics technology. Seamlessly changes from your PC to your tablet for maximum versatility – all using the 6th Generation Intel Core processors. There are two 6th Gen Intel Core i3 Processors, i3-6100H (High-Performance Graphics) and i3-6100U (Ultra-low Powered). The most amazing new 2 in 1 devices blend Intel level performance with exceptional tablet mobility into one incredibly versatile, highly capable device. 6th generation Intel Core processor wakes quicker than ever and lets you switch in and out of apps more seamlessly than ever. CPU Cache is an area of fast memory located on the processor and both of these are 3 MB Intel Smart Cache. Besides the Cache, they share the same number of cores (2 each) and threads (4 each). 6th Gen Intel Core i3 Processors also come equipped with Intel Tubo Boost 2.0 and have an amazing base frequency of 2.3 GHz (on i3-6100U) and 2.7 GHz (on i3-6100U). Though both of these have Intel Hyper-Threading Technology, 6th Gen Intel Core i3 Processors don’t offer Intel’s vPro Technology.

Yesterday, the 13-inch Dell Inspiron 7000 series 2-in-1 was released, which you won’t find priced at less than $500. Though you’ll notice that the entry-level edition is limited to a weaker Pentium Skylake processor. However, for $50 more, you can supersize it to an i3-6100U. Dell describes the performance on these as, ‘Intel processors offer speed and efficiency for a responsive performance whether you’re surfing the web, writing a paper or uploading photos.’

These are all extremely powerful processors and come equipped with some of the best technologies from Intel.

Intel Turbo Boost Technology dynamically increases the processor’s frequency when needed by ‘taking advantage of thermal and power headroom’ to give a burst of speed when user needs it, and increased energy efficiency when running at regular frequency.

Intel vPro Technology is a set of security and manageability capabilities built into the processor aimed at addressing some critical areas of IT security: Threat management (including protection from rootkits, viruses and malware), Confidential personal and business data protection, Remote and local monitoring, remediation, and repair of PCs and workstation.

Intel Hyper-Threading Technology (Intel HT Technology) delivers two processing threads per physical core. Intel says, ‘Highly threaded applications can get more work done in parallel, completing tasks sooner.’
