Today Samsung and AT&T announced the Galaxy S6 Active, a variant of the Galaxy S6 with a greater focus on durability and ruggedness. Releasing an Active version of their flagship Galaxy device has become a tradition for Samsung since the Galaxy S4, and it looks like this year is no exception. While it differs in its construction and design from the regular Samsung Galaxy S6, it is very much similar to Samsung Galaxy S5 Active. Samsung has made it exclusively available on AT&T in the US. For the regular two-year commitment, you can expect to hand over $200 (~Rs.12000), or if you’re looking to skip the paperwork entirely, $695 (~ ₹42000) is the off-contract price.
The IP68 rated dust, water and shock resistant handset packs a 5.1-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED display that touts a whopping 577 PPI to handle your swipes through Android 5.0.2 (Lollipop). Inside is the Exynos 7420 2.1/1.5GHz A57/A53 64-bit processor coupled with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage do the heaving lifting with 16-megapixel rear-facing and 5-megapixel front-facing cameras for photo duties. In addition to staying dry in depths of up to 1.5 meters for up to 30 minutes, the S6 Active also packs in a beefy 3,500mAh battery. That’s significantly larger than the battery inside the regular Galaxy S6. And yes, when it does run down, you can juice up with wireless charging accessories or make use of the Fast Charging option to charge to 50 percent in around half an hour.
Talking more about the camera, there is a 16-megapixel rear camera and LED flash while there is a 5-megapixel front camera on board. Although not mentioned by the firm, the Galaxy S6 Active is likely to feature a slew of camera features such as quick launch, tracking AF, auto real-time HDR, f/1.9, IR detect white balance, low light video, high clear zoom, virtual shot, slow motion, fast motion, pro mode, and selective focus, like the flagship Galaxy S6.
The Galaxy S6 Active also meets the Mil-STD-810G standard for resistance to pressure, temperature, humidity, shocks and vibrations. AT&T lists the Galaxy S6 Active as “Coming Soon”, and customers will be able to purchase it on June 12. It will be available in camo white, camo blue, and gray finishes.
