Micromax just announced it’s latest Smartphone the Micromax Canvas Silver 5 dubbed by the company as the “world’s lightest phone” and at 97 grams it more than substantiates the claim. At its launch event on June 18, Micromax emphasized on the slimness of the phone at 5.1 mm and has also tied up with Airtel for Double Data 4G plans with the Phone.
Micromax Canvas Silver 5 has a decent 2 GB RAM built-in but another major disappointment is the screen resolution of the smartphone which is just 1280 x 720 (720p) which has a lower PPI count as compared to the FullHD screens seen in phones such as the Xiaomi Mi4i and the Huawei Honor. The Camera has an 8 MP rear camera with a Sony IMX219, CMOS sensor and Blue glass filter with a professional photography mode and a 5 MP front camera for selfie aficionados. The device runs Android 5.0 with the 64-bit architecture, and it has a single SIM slot which supports 4G LTE and is one of the first 4G enabled phones to weigh less than 100 grams.
Micromax Canvas Silver 5 has 16 GB internal storage which is not expandable which might have been given a miss given the particular aim of making the device as slim as possible. It has a 2000 mAh battery, which promises around 345 hours of standby time, Micromax claims that a combination of the AMOLED display, the CMOS sensor and OS optimization the power consumption will be lowered. It has a NXP Smart power amplifier which helps the smartphone deliver a premium sound experience and Dirac HD Sound which enhances the listening experience of the user. It also includes Bluetooth 4.0, GPS and other connectivity options.
Overall, Micromax Canvas Silver 5 is a disappointment in the specifications department, but the thinness and connectivity come at a price, it has its task cut out as it has to compete with the likes of the Gionee Elife E7 and the E8. To see how this phone performs in comparison to the competition which offers better specifications remains to be seen.
