A person’s character is determined by the type of music he listens, and the speaker quality is determined by how well the speaker is able to deliver the sound output. Kinivo ZX100 Mini Portable speakers is one such audio peripherals which gives you an all around performance. Being that small and delivering a good sound output, makes it a unique choice for people. It comes with 9 colour options ranging from bright pink to cool blue, so you can pick a colour that defines you. So here’s our review of the Kinivo ZX100 Mini Portable Speakers, which will give you an overall impression of the device.

Design

When we received our Kinivo ZX100 Mini Portable speakers, we were quite surprised with what we saw. This device is truly portable and small, in every possible manner. It can easily slip into your palm and is a perfect fit. It is like holding a tennis ball in your hands. The design team at Kinivo has managed to produce a speaker that looks unique and different from most speakers available in the market. It’s catchy and you’d definitely look at it twice. The speakers have a near about square design with curved sides. The Kinino ZX 100 Mini gives you a premium feeling despite being built of plastic. The speakers come with an expansive resonator that allows for a greater bass resonation and a decent low frequency output.

The volume rockers are found on two adjacent corners of the speakers; while you’ll have to long press the power button on the other corner until the blue LED light turns on to start using the speakers. To enable the expansive resonator of the speaker, you can simply press and twist the central circle. Given the sleek design, at times we did experience slight difficulty in finding and pressing the buttons. Only prolonged use will show how well they hold up. Fortunately Kinivo offers 1 year warranty along with the device. When you turn the speakers upside down, you’ll notice the short audio cable, a LED light, micro USB for charging and an AUX port.

Portability

There is no doubt about Kinivo ZX100 Mini being highly portable speakers, which is one of the biggest selling points of the device. The short audio cable that comes along with the speaker means that you will never have to worry about carrying an audio cable along with you. You can connect it to any smart phone or laptop, irrespective of the operating system it runs on. The Kinivo ZX100 Mini will run on almost all devices without a hitch. At the same time, the device remains light weight at 94 grams only.

While it’s true that the audio cable offers great portability, we would have liked the cable to slightly longer than the existing 10 cm cable present under the device. Once you connect it to any device, the said device then becomes unusable (or highly uncomfortable to use) unless placed on a flat surface. Basically you can’t click pictures or read an e-book on your smartphone in the comfort of your poolside chair because the cable is too short for the device to rest on anything else.

Sound

When we first plugged in the Kinivo ZX100 Mini, we were slightly skeptical about its performance, most of which were dispelled almost instantly. The ZX100 Mini is all about amplifying the sound of the music playing on your device and does a pretty good job doing so. The loudness would easily fill a small room or your immediate surroundings but we would call it far from perfect. While playing music we noticed that it distorted at really high volume. The bass for a speaker so small is impressive and the expansive resonator certainly plays a role in it. The expansive resonator design is meant to allow for a better reproduction of bass and low frequency notes. While playing the “Bohemian Rhapsody”, we could feel the vibrations on the table. The speaker plays in mono considering it has only one driver, but then again you can’t have everything without giving up something else.

During our tests we also found that the speaker would heat up and produced a whirling sound at audio produced over 100 dB, and has an amp frequency range of 250 Hz-16Khz. Another great feature about the speaker is you can connect multiple speakers together through the AUX port available, allowing you to have a better audio experience with minimum fuss. Although it would make more sense to buy a better speaker than buying 5 Kinivo ZX100 Mini speakers, but this feature comes in handy at gatherings and small parties where different kinivo owners can join their speakers together to produce a louder and a better sound.

Battery Life

The Kinino ZX 100 Mini speakers come with a very impressive battery life, there is nothing stopping you from using the portable mini speakers where ever you want, whenever you want. To charge the speakers, you get a USB cable in the box and it takes about 2 hours to fully charge. While you won’t find any claim related to the battery life on the box, our tests indicate a battery life of up to 5-7 hours on medium volume. Considering the price point and the size, that’s quite impressive for the mini portable speakers.

Verdict

The Kinivo ZX100 Mini comes with a price tag of Rs. 1,499 but sells for Rs. 999 on the popular e-commerce website, Amazon.in. When it comes to speakers, you get what you pay for. It is hard to find quality speakers at this range, and Kinivo ZX100 Mini offers you an above average audio performance along with great portability and a well designed body. Even though it has its fair share of problems like the short audio cable or slight distortion at really high volumes, the pros offered outweigh the cons by miles. At this price point, it is hard to find a worthy competitor for the Kinivo ZX100 Mini.
