PlayStation 4 vs PlayStation 3, here’s the comparison – Is PS4 worth buying? Or sit back with PS3?

Well, Christmas is just 5 days from now and gamers from all over the world would be plugging into their gaming rigs these vacations. The reason we are here today is one of our readers asking us to do a comparison between the newly launched PlayStation 4 and the former console, the PlayStation 3. The advantage the gamers have is that they can still choose to buy the former gaming console as Sony has not yet discontinued its manufacturing. And in this post, we shall be discussing whether it is a good option of upgrading your old (or buying) PlayStation 3, or you should stick with it?

Here we have a specifications comparison chart between the two gaming consoles –

PlayStation 3 PlayStation 4
CPU 7 Core IBM Cell 8 Core AMD Jaguar
CPU Frequency 3.2 GHz 1.6 GHz
CPU RSX AMD Radeon
RAM 256MB XDR + 256MB DDR3 8GB GDDR5
USB USB 2.0 USB 3.0
Bluetooth 2.0 2.1
Controllers 610mAh DualShock 3 (6.8 oz) 1000mAh DualShock 4 (7.4 oz)
Number of controllers 7 4

Comparison Factor – SPECIFICATIONS

Sony – “The PS4 is roughly 10 times as powerful as the PS3.” Other than being a lot more powerful, as you’d expect, the most important difference between the two is that they use completely different architectures. The PS3 uses a custom Sony-made Cell architecture. While the PS4’s architecture comes up with a very different approach. It has an x86-based chip, the same type used in both Windows PCs and the Xbox One.

The PlayStation 4 is a vastly superior gaming rig, as one can assume. It has an 8-core AMD Jaguar CPU, clocked up to 2.75GHz. This is supported with an 800MHz AMD Radeon GPU and 8GB of GDDR5 RAM. On the other hand, PlayStation 3 has a single-core chip running at 3.2GHz. All you get is a 550MHz GPU and 256MB of DDR3 RAM. You might want to point toward the higher clock speed of the PS3, but the fact is that, it comes up with a single core processor and even disappoints users when we consider the RAM. The PlayStation 3 is a good gaming rig, but it’s no where close to the master, The PlayStation 4.

Comparison Factor – PRICE

It’s Christmas time and many of the gamers all around the world are ready to spend any amount of money in order to get the best gaming experience for the vacations. True, but here we shall be considering the fact that the buyer belongs to a middle income group.

The Sony PS4 starts at Rs. 39,990 without any games. And what you’ll get at that price is the console and a controller. And moreover, the games won’t be available at a cheap price. Going by the information collected by other websites, PlayStation games are expected to cost for not less that Rs. 5,000.

The PS3 starts at Rs. 17,000 for the 12GB version, or Rs. 22,000 for the 500GB edition. If you are good at hunting coupons and deals, you might get it even cheaper than the stated price. And yes, the games are less costlier than the PS4, considering the fact that’s it’s been almost 8 years since it’s launch.

Comparison Factor – DESIGN

Saying that PS4 looks quite similar might be considered wrong. It’s much more angular, with slanted sides. Like the PS3, it’s a deep console – 275mm wide and 305mm deep. It’s not going to rest flat on a small surface. However, if you’re low on space, it can be put on its side, as Sony has confirmed.

According to the noise tests conducted, it has been observed that the PS4 is quieter than the former console. Results – after 60 minutes, the PS3 created 2.1 sone* of noise to the PS4’s 0.83 sone*.

*Sone is a measurement of loudness, and 2.1 sone equates to around 50 dB.

Comparison Factor – GAMES

Well, the fact that Sony allows it’s users to stream their old games really attracts me. But that, in no way means that you’ll be allowed to play your PS3 games on the new hardware. Instead you’ll have to wait for 2014’s PS3 game streaming service to arrive, which will let you play old games over your internet connection. Exactly what it’ll offer in terms of games, prices and so on is as unknown at present, though.

Comparison Factor – GRAPHICS

Here are a video uploaded by TmarTn. Have a look at them –

Having viewed the Ghosts Gameplay comparision, we can easily see how well the next generation console is able to put up the required and right amount of colours. Another factor that we should compare is the lighting. The PS4 is far above the former gaming console, when we consider the light. These might not be the best graphics that we get to see, but it’s a lot better than the PS3. Good work Sony!

Comparison Factor – MEDIA PLAYBACK and STREAMING

The PS3 is a significantly better media player than the PS4. And the reason we say this is that, you can play video stored on external drives and memory sticks, while the PS4 won’t allow you to do so. Moreover, the PS3 can also stream files for you, wirelessly from other device! On the other hand, PS4 is not capable of doing it. We’re quite sure that the PS4 will receive it soon, but no one knows when.

And talking about the similarity, both consoles have Netflix and LoveFilm.

The VERDICT

It’s clear from the above comparison factors that PS4 is way ahead than PS3 in terms of gaming. It is also expected to get the new titles, specially designed for its superb specification. On the other hand, PS3 is an option for more casual gamers and not serious one. And it delivers a better media player. But will one pay Rs. 20,000 more to get that extra thing? You can easily get two PS3’s in the price of one PS4. Not worth the amount, that’s what I would like to say. But if it would have been intelligently priced at something around Rs. 30,000 to Rs. 33,000, I’d rather suggest people to go for the PS4.
